happy or sad{2:36 minutes to read} I’ve been mediating divorce cases for a number of years. I first began mediating because of the need for an alternative to a litigated divorce. As the years have gone by, more and more couples are choosing mediation.

When making the choice to use mediation, divorcing couples rely on finding a professional mediator who will guide them through the separation/divorce process. Most couples don’t have a lot of money to spend on a protracted, multi-year divorce case. The money they have needs to be used to get them through the separation/divorce process quickly, not line the pockets of a professional.

When working with a couple, I welcome lots of questions and emails. I don’t charge for them. I’m almost always available via cell phone.

We start the mediation process with a free initial consultation. At the consultation, we discuss their immediate needs as well as a review of their finances to see if we need to get valuations for any marital assets. When they do come in for a mediation session, they have their documents, valuations of marital property, etc., which makes the mediation process move much faster.

I see my job as being of service to my clients and helping them through a very difficult time when they may be in conflict, the children are upset, and the uncertainty of what is going to happen post-divorce keeps them up at night.

Most couples only require a few mediation sessions. I don’t make a lot of money on my cases because I keep the time they spend with me to a minimum. I have a business coach who says I’m the worst business man he’s ever seen because I should take more mediation sessions to reach a settlement agreement. But I don’t, so I have to turnover a large number of mediation cases to stay in business.

But you know what? If he is correct, and that makes me a lousy business man, that’s fine with me. And truthfully, I’m kind of proud of that.
